Grimeborn Festival (Arcola Theatre), London (GB) stages Mozart's Die Zauberflöte: 5 performances between 2026-08-25 and 2026-08-29.
Grimeborn is London's cheeky answer to Glyndebourne, its name a wink at the grime of Dalston rather than the lawns of Sussex. The festival was founded in 2007 by Mehmet Ergen, artistic director of the Arcola Theatre, the fringe venue he had opened in 2000 with producer Leyla Nazli inside a former textile factory on Arcola Street. In 2011 the theatre moved a few streets away into a converted Victorian paint factory on Ashwin Street, whose two intimate studio spaces now host the festival every summer.
The formula has barely changed: classic operas stripped to their essentials, new and experimental work, young casts, chamber-sized bands and tickets priced far below West End levels. The 2026 edition, the nineteenth, runs from mid July to early September with thirteen operas on the bill, among them Die Zauberflöte. Ensemble OrQuesta and director Marcio da Silva recast Mozart's singspiel for modern eyes, proof that the piece thrives even a few feet from the audience.
