Hungarian State Opera (Andrássy), Budapest (HU) stages Mozart's Die Zauberflöte: 6 performances between 2026-11-29 and 2026-12-13.
The Hungarian State Opera House on Andrássy Avenue is Miklós Ybl's neo-Renaissance masterpiece, built between 1875 and 1884 with funding from the city and Emperor Franz Joseph. National pride shaped the project: apart from a few noble exceptions such as Carrara marble, only Hungarian materials and craftsmen were allowed. The house that opened on 27 September 1884 soon earned a reputation for acoustics among the finest in Europe, and Gustav Mahler directed the company from 1888 to 1891. After nearly five years of restoration led by architect Gábor Zoboki, the building reopened in March 2022, its facade, frescoes and gilded auditorium returned to Ybl's original colours.
Mozart has been part of the repertoire from the beginning, and Mahler led acclaimed Mozart evenings during his tenure. The Magic Flute, A varázsfuvola to Budapest audiences, remains a fixture: Miklós Szinetár's symbol-rich staging keeps the work on the playbill, and at holiday time the house adds a shortened Magic Flute for children.
