Opéra de Massy

La flûte enchantée · Opéra de Massy

opened 1993

Opéra de Massy, Massy (FR) stages Mozart's Die Zauberflöte: 3 performances between 2026-12-11 and 2026-12-13.

About the house

The Opéra de Massy is the youngest opera house in France, and the only one built in the heart of a working-class suburb. The idea came from Claude Germon, mayor of Massy, who wanted grand lyric theatre inside the large housing estates south of Paris, where in the early 1990s every second home was social housing. Designed by Arturo Oliveras and Alain Aubert, construction began in 1989, and the house opened on 9 October 1993 with the celebrated mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza on stage.

Behind its glass facade sit an 880 seat auditorium and a 500 square metre stage, generous for a city of this size. The theatre became the first venue awarded the label of scène conventionnée lyrique by the French Ministry of Culture, maintains its own orchestra under conductor Dominique Rouits, and pairs each season of opera, dance and concerts with steady outreach to schools and neighbourhoods. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte is among the works it brings to this audience.
