Theater Bonn (Opernhaus)

Bonn's opera house sits right on the bank of the Rhine, a piece of confident 1960s modernism with a glass foyer that looks out over the river. It opened in 1965, after the old theatre had been lost in the war, and in the pit plays the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, which is exactly the kind of name you can carry when your city is Beethoven's birthplace.

The current Zauberflöte is worth the trip in itself: Cécile Roussat and Julien Lubek, both trained in mime and circus arts, created the production for Versailles, and Bonn is where it now lives, fourteen evenings a season of acrobats, shadow play and painted skies. Three conductors share the run, so even regulars come back twice.
