Ciudad Cultural Konex

Ciudad Cultural Konex occupies a 1920s industrial building in the Abasto district of Buenos Aires, a cooking-oil factory and warehouse that stayed in service until 1992. The Konex Foundation had the complex converted by the studio of architect Clorindo Testa, which kept its raw industrial character intact. The foundation stone was laid in 2004 with performances by Luis Alberto Spinetta, Charly García, Gustavo Cerati and Fito Páez, and the centre was inaugurated on November 7, 2005. Its 25,000 square metres hold nine spaces, from an open-air courtyard to a columned hall, hosting theatre, music, dance, film and design.

It is not an opera house, which is exactly the point. The Konex classical music festival devoted its 2016 edition to Mozart, Juventus Lyrica has brought La flauta mágica here for its family series Vamos a la Música, and in 2026 Gerardo Hochman condensed Die Zauberflöte into a 75-minute opera-circus for children, with singers mirrored by acrobats.
