Palau de la Música Catalana
The Palau de la Música Catalana is what happens when a choir commissions a building and gets a fever dream of mosaic, stained glass and stone flowers. Lluís Domènech i Montaner built it between 1905 and 1908 for the Orfeó Català, and UNESCO put it on the World Heritage list in 1997. Its concert hall is lit by an inverted dome of coloured glass, a sun that hangs downwards from the ceiling.
Opera here is a guest, and that makes it an event. The Òpera Popular de Barcelona brings its Magic Flute into this hall with puppets, a chamber orchestra and a troupe that doubles and triples its roles, a travelling-theatre telling of the story under the most extravagant skylight in Europe.
