A Summer of Magic Flutes
Somewhere on earth, almost every night this year, Tamino walks into the trial by fire. Our map currently tracks 370 upcoming performances of Die Zauberflöte in 20 countries on five continents, and this single week shows how far Mozart's bird-catcher gets around.
Tonight, 4 July, the summer run opens at Santa Fe Opera under the New Mexico sky. In Dresden, the Semperoper plays its production with Katharina Müllner in the pit. Nine time zones away, the Hungarian State Opera's Japan tour reaches Takasaki, one day after Niigata. The Festival d'Aix is mid-run in the courtyard of the Théâtre de l'Archevêché. Buenos Aires spends its winter holidays with a circus-flavoured Flauta Mágica at the Konex, and in Prague, young singers of the Summer Nights Festival stand on the stage of the Estates Theatre, the house where Mozart himself once conducted.
The season ahead looks just as busy. The Volksoper Wien opens a 21-date run on 8 September. Theater Bonn unveils a new production on 3 October. Poznań follows in November with Sjaron Minailo's staging, and in December the Metropolitan Opera brings back its holiday Magic Flute. From Gwangju to Gelsenkirchen, from a village hall in Uttwil to open-air nights in Rothenburg: the map has them all, with casts, dates and tickets.
