From Vicenza to Melbourne
Our map now tracks 448 upcoming performances in 21 countries. This month we went back over every house on our watch list, from Gothenburg to Beijing, and the season looks different up close.
It starts in the oldest indoor theatre still in use. Iván Fischer brings his staging to Palladio's Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza on 23, 25 and 26 October, all three nights sold out. Prague's Estates Theatre, where Mozart conducted the premiere of Don Giovanni, now shows its ten exact nights from 31 October to 20 March instead of a vague range. The same day the Landesbühnen Sachsen play their spring production at home in Radebeul, then take it on the road: Bad Elster in November, Neustadt in February and Bautzen in May.
November belongs to the east. Poznań plays four nights from the 18th, and Beijing's NCPA now has all six nights of its run with Opéra de Bordeaux, 24 to 29 November, conducted by Lü Jia. Winter brings the Royal Opera House, the Wiener Staatsoper and Opera Nova Bydgoszcz, new on the map for three nights in January. And Opera Australia adds a second city: after 27 nights in Sydney the production moves to Melbourne for seven nights in May.
Two corrections. In August we listed the Met from 11 December. Those performances are the Met's holiday presentation, a shortened English version for families, so they are no longer on the map, as with every adaptation. And GöteborgsOperan has cancelled six December nights; its run now opens on 18 December, with three new dates added. We would rather show fewer dates than one that is not real.
