Sassari, Italy
Teatro Comunale di Sassari
Sassari is the second city of Sardinia and has kept an opera season alive since the 1950s through the Ente Concerti Marialisa de Carolis, named after a soprano from the city. Since 2012 the season has had a modern home, the Teatro Comunale, a brick-and-glass hall built for exactly this purpose.
The island connection makes touring productions rare and home-built ones precious. The Flauto magico staged here by Hugo de Ana, a designer-director known for grand stage pictures, is one of the few chances to see Mozart's Singspiel produced on Sardinian soil rather than shipped across the water.
