On stage she was the Queen for Salzburg, Vienna and the Met through the seventies and eighties; off stage she became one of German song's fiercest advocates, founding a festival for the German language and teaching masterclasses well into her eighties. Somewhere past the heliopause, the aria keeps travelling either way.
